We just celebrated my son’s 10th birthday neon style- and it was a BLAST! Now that we have the black lights I’m trying to come up with how many other excuses we can use to pull them out. Something about them is just so dang cool. I’m telling you, whether you are 5 or 50 I think this theme has real potential. I challenge you to present the idea of a glow party to the most too cool teen you know and see what they think. This is the party theme for people who think they’re too cool for party themes! And I’m here to share all the details.

Glow in the Dark Neon Party Decorations Tips & Ideas

So the key to a successful black light party is ….. NEON! Lots of neon, and of course you need the black lights too. So when brainstorming the decorations for this glow in the dark party I was really focused on incorporating as much neon as possible.

DIY Balloon Centerpiece

I started by making a quick centerpiece for our table- I wanted to incorporate these balloon sticks. So I made a base out of some scrap wood we had in our garage. It wasn’t quite a 2X4 but that’s the kind of size you are wanting. The length will depend on the length of your table and how much of the table you want taken up with this centerpiece. I made mine about 4 feet. I just drilled some holes for the balloon sticks (it took some trial and error to figure out what size drill bit to use), cut the balloon sticks to a bunch of different lengths and then added our neon balloons. You can check out a video tutorial I made here– it’s easier to watch it than to read my description!

Blacklight Party Tablescape Ideas

For our tablescape I stuck with the neon colors. Here is a tablecover similar to the one I used (actually I think I like this one better) and some fun coordinating plates and napkins. And this pack was actually my best buy. The tape was super fun and the garlands were what showed up the brightest out of everything under the black light. You can check out a video of different ways I used the neon tape for our party here (including making the birthday boy a shirt!).

I also spread glow sticks around the table and we had a light up table runner. Here’s a fun pack that includes the glasses we put at everyone’s seat and a variety of glow sticks. And of course you need the black lights! These are the ones I got and they worked great. The four of them are plenty to light up a pretty good sized family room if you position the lights strategically (you’ll need to put them raised up a bit on a table or something). Last but not least were the light up margarita glasses. They were a huge hit!

Glow Party Dessert Table Ideas

The star of our dessert table was the super awesome glow in the dark cake my mother in law made! It really was a show-stopper. The only help I can be there is I know she used this edible neon dust and these light wands. (I ended up using some of the light wands on table centerpieces as well).

Behind the cake table I set up a custom backdrop that I ordered from Oriental Trading, but I love this one from Amazon as well. Then I used my neon balloons to make a long balloon garland that went across the entire wall. I usually use 3M hooks and fishing line to hang them up and this balloon garland strip makes it so easy to put one together. Just be sure to blow your balloons up to different sizes. To jazz the balloon garland up a bit I added some glow sticks and I wove some of those neon garlands through it as well. Although I cracked them and added them to the balloon garland in the morning I was disappointed to see that by evening they weren’t glowing very well! So maybe wait until later to do that if you can.

The neon vases I found at the dollar store and I filled them with the clear vase fillers and some left over light up wands from the cake. And the black tea lights were a nice addition when the lights were off. I also used them over on the table on the balloon centerpiece. And a nice finishing touch was I hung these neon curtains up in front of our glow room to really separate it from the rest of the house. It was fun for the kids when they all arrived and followed the arrows on the ground to the glow room. There were lots of “whoa!”s and “this is sick!”. I felt accomplished ;).

Glow in the Dark Party Games

After the boys came in for some dinner and to get properly adorned with glow sticks- we headed out in the dark to play some glow in the dark games! First up was capture the flag. They actually played this for over an hour and I think it was the main event. We used a capture the flag kit, which was pretty fun because the flag glows and it come with territory markers and things. I couldn’t find our kit on amazon anymore but here is a similar one. When the boys petered out of capture the flag we played laser tag for awhile. When I want a more expensive item for a party for entertainment, I usually make it my child’s birthday gift as well (or part of it). I also had a glow in the dark football ready and a glow in the dark frisbee with some game ideas in mind but we ran out of time. We have little soccer goals and I set them up and was just going to let them play a soccer type game but the frisbee where you get a point if your team gets the frisbee into the goal. Also this neon tape could be used to turn lots of regular games into glow in the dark games in black lighting. Here’s a list of more ideas to get you going:

  • Glow Stick Limbo: Use glow sticks to create a limbo pole and see how low guests can go under it in the dark.
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Twister: Create a DIY Twister board using glow-in-the-dark paint or the neon tape on a regular twister mat.
