DIY Minecraft Trunk or Treat

If you have a Minecraft-loving kid, this DIY Minecraft Trunk or Treat is such a fun way to bring the game to life for Halloween! The best part about our setup is that I didn’t actually make most of it specifically for trunk or treat—I repurposed the Minecraft characters, blocks, and decorations I had already made for my son’s Minecraft birthday party. With a little rearranging (and a few Halloween touches), they worked perfectly to transform our trunk into a colorful, pixelated Minecraft world.

Whether you already have Minecraft party decorations you can reuse or you’re starting from scratch, I’m sharing all the details for recreating our Minecraft Trunk or Treat, including how I made the DIY Minecraft characters and blocks that brought the whole setup together. Most of these decorations are inexpensive, easy to customize, and can be used again for a Minecraft birthday party or other Minecraft-themed event!

I started by hanging this Minecraft tablecover over the opening of my trunk to set the backdrop (and hide all the junk in my trunk). You could also use something like this to hang from your trunk. We then assembled the blocks and characters that I made out of cardboard boxes. I was told that they had to be set up in a certain way or it “wouldn’t make sense” so I just left the expert to it. We had: grass blocks, TNT blocks, Steve, a creeper and a pig. I also had an Iron ore block and a diamond ore block.

DIY Grass & TNT Blocks

The Minecraft grass and TNT blocks were some of the easiest decorations to make, and they added a lot of color and height to our trunk-or-treat display. For the grass blocks, I used 12×12 boxes and covered the tops with green paper. I trimmed the bottom edge of the green paper into chunky, uneven squares to give it that signature pixelated Minecraft look.

For the TNT blocks, I covered the sides of the 12×12 boxes with red cardstock, leaving the bottoms uncovered. Next, I cut strips of white cardstock and glued them around three sides of each box, leaving the top, bottom and back plain. I used my Cricut to cut out “TNT” in a Minecraft-style font and added the letters to the white strips. One reason I loved using 12×12 boxes for these projects is that a single sheet of 12×12 cardstock fits perfectly over an entire side—no piecing paper together!

DIY Creeper & Pig

For the Creeper, I used four cardboard boxes in different sizes—and his head is actually an Eggo box from Costco! I wrapped each box in this green paper before stacking and assembling them to create the body. I cut the Creeper’s pixelated face with my Cricut, and I’ve included the cut file in my Minecraft Digital Party Pack if you want to make your own. You can also watch this video to see how I put the Creeper together.

The Minecraft pig took a little more creativity because you’ll need several different box sizes to get the proportions right. Instead of buying everything, I wandered around the house looking for anything box-shaped that might work—including full boxes of Kraft mac & cheese for the legs! Once I had pieces that were approximately the right sizes, I covered everything in pink cardstock and used duct tape to assemble the pig. Don’t worry too much about finding the perfect boxes; once they’re covered in paper and put together, those random pantry boxes make a surprisingly cute Minecraft pig—and he’s a fun addition to a Minecraft Trunk or Treat display.

DIY Minecraft Steve

Materials: 3 12×12 boxes, light blue and dark blue cardstock, tan, brown and pink cardstock, duct tape, Sharpie and a cutting machine

  1. Start with Steve’s head by taping one 12×12 box closed and covering four sides with tan cardstock. Since the back and bottom won’t show, you can leave those uncovered. Use dark brown cardstock for his hair, then add his pixelated eyes, nose and mouth.
  2. For Steve’s torso, leave the flaps open on another 12×12 box and tape them into place. Cover the three visible sides with light blue cardstock, then add tan cardstock along the top for the exposed skin around his neck.
  3. Make his legs from the third 12×12 box, again leaving the flaps open to give you a longer shape. Cover the box with dark blue cardstock, then add light blue cardstock along the bottom for his feet. I simply used a Sharpie to draw a line down the center to separate his two legs.
  4. Once all three sections are finished, use duct tape to attach the head, torso and legs together. The arms are where you’ll have to get a little creative! I couldn’t find boxes that matched quite right, so I used whatever smaller boxes I could scrounge up around the house. Cover them with tan and blue cardstock to match Steve, then duct tape them to the sides of his body. Mine ended up a little short, but his T-Rex arms are part of his charm!

I have the cut files for Steve’s face and hair included in my Minecraft Digital Party Pack, which makes recreating his pixelated features much easier. You can also watch a video of the process of making Steve here. Once assembled, he’s a great larger-than-life piece to anchor a DIY Minecraft Trunk or Treat display.
