We recently celebrated my son’s 8th birthday while on a family cruise, and I’m here to share tips and tricks to pull off an effortless celebration even in the middle of a vacation! Celebrating your child’s big day on a cruise can be just as magical (if not more), with a little planning, a pinch of creativity, and some cruise-friendly party tricks up your sleeve. Whether you’re packing a few festive decorations in your suitcase or dreaming up clever ways to turn your cabin into a mini party zone. From themed décor to simple surprises that won’t violate cruise rules , here are my favorite tips and ideas for making your little one’s birthday feel extra special—even in the middle of the ocean.

Our family cruise to Mexico was actually the family Christmas present, and it was just by coincidence that my son’s birthday also fell on the dates that we would be cruising. At first I thought, great- two birds, one stone! But as the cruise approached I started to feel a little mom guilt. It was technically his Christmas present, not his birthday present. And all his brothers got to celebrate their birthdays and go on a cruise. So I guess he was getting a little rooked over (I mean I didn’t feel too guilty- he’s going on a cruise, how bad can life be?). So I decided to plan a few things to make the day extra special for him.

Fun & Easy Cruise Ship Birthday Ideas for Kids

Decorations

I decided to bring an extra duffle bag with us with some party supplies (presents and decorations). My first thought was to do a balloon garland in our stateroom for him. Balloons are compact and easy to pack and I’ve done that while traveling before. But I started to realize that was probably a terrible idea for a cruise. First of all, it takes me about an hour to put together a garland- and who wants to spend an hour of their precious cruise time doing that? Not me. Second once we pull down the top bunks in our stateroom I knew there really wouldn’t be much room for a garland. And then popping and throwing them all away before we got off the ship would have made a big mess. So, while I don’t recommend balloons, here are some fun ideas:

• Magnets for your door– I got this birthday themed set
• Door decorations- picked up one similar to this from dollar tree
• Streamers– they are much quicker to put up and take down than balloons and still made the room feel festive! Use the magnetic hooks to hang them around the room.
• Happy birthday banner- I picked one up from dollar tree that we hung above the TV. Here’s a fun set of things that would be perfect to hang around the room.
• Poster for the cabin door– a fun and unique thing I thought of was to put up a poster on our cabin door with some pens. I wrote ” wish Hudson a happy 8th birthday” at the top of the poster hoping people walking by would stop and sign it. I had my 11 year old son stand out there for a few minutes asking people as they walked by if they would like to sign it. They sure did! The poster filled up throughout the day. That was fun for him to see.
• Themed decorations– we didn’t do this, but you could lean into the cruise idea and pick a related birthday theme for decor like pirates, luau, tropical, under the sea, mermaid etc.

Don’t forget to bring extra magnets to hang things up. Any kind of magnets will work, but these hooks are extra handy. You could have someone take the birthday kiddo to breakfast while you decorate. Or I actually snuck out of bed and decorated the door and room while he was still sleeping! He also woke up to a new stuffy on his bunk which he was thrilled about.

Celebration

There’s a few ways you could celebrate on board, depending on your itinerary for the day and what your child would prefer.

• Dinner Celebration– We had our main celebration with presents and a personalized cake from our chef at dinner. We were there with some family and friends and they all had brought a few little presents for him- so thoughtful! And he was over the moon to have things to open. I had brought a few with me as well, even though I also left some at home (I let him know he had a few more to open when we got home). Just make your waiter aware at the beginning of the cruise of your intentions to have a birthday dinner and I’m sure they’ll come up with something special to celebrate!
• Ice Cream Party- If there’s one thing I know about cruise ships is that there’s always an unlimited soft serve ice cream shop (I think? all the one’s we’ve been on anyway…). So one idea is to pick a time of the day to meet up with all the friends and family on board and have ice cream and open presents together. I’m sure if you start singing you’ll get lots of people joining in. This would be great if it’s an at-sea day. You may even be about to arrange a movie in their honor. Speak to guest services about the movies they play on the big screen at the beginning of the cruise. They may accommodate your request to show the birthday kiddo’s favorite movie.
• Arcade Party- Most cruise ships have arcades, so another idea is to meet in the arcade for an arcade party! Or minigolf.. or pool party. You get the idea 😉
• Gift Treasure Hunt– If you’re not traveling with anyone else, try a gift treasure hunt. Hide presents around the cruise ship with clues to their locations. This could draw out the present opening process and could be a blast to complete together. I bet cruise employees will help you if you ask (i.e. maybe one of the gifts is at the ice cream shop with the crew member.)
• Plan a Birthday Excursion– maybe instead of presents you do an extra extravagant excursion you otherwise would not do, like swimming with the dolphins or zip lining, or whatever your birthday kiddo would love to do.

Other Birthday Cruise Tips

• Make sure the birthday kiddo has something to wear, like a crown or ribbon, so that everyone knows it’s their birthday! You never know what special treatment that might entitle them to. Here’s what I got for my son. At minimum lots of “happy birthday”s from other guests.
• Talk to your room steward and waiter about the special event. They can often arrange things for you at no extra cost.
• Be aware of the cruise line rules. Usually there’s no open flames, helium or tape on the walls allowed
• Visit the kids club and let them know its their birthday! They usually have a little something to do to celebrate.
