After about a decade of posting Teacher Appreciation Week ideas here on my blog, they remain some of my most popular posts! I am honored to be a resource to help celebrate teachers! As a substitute teacher I have gained an increase of respect (if that was possible) for what they go through each and every day. This year we celebrated in Galactic style with Star Wars inspired printables, decorations, food and themes. I’m here to share all the details with you so that you can adapt it for your school, classroom, or even just your family. This is a great resource for PTA groups, room parents, and school administrations that want to really show their teachers some love during TAW. And as usual I have a printable bundle that ties it all together and should make this as straightforward as possible. I’ve done the leg work for you, just follow along.
I’ll walk you through what we did each day, but to start off we had two flyers that we sent out to prep our school for the event. We had a version we sent to the teachers telling them what they could expect for the week, and another version we sent home to families with ideas on things they could do for their teachers throughout the week. Both flyers are available in my Star Wars teacher appreciation printable pack along with a Canva template link so you can edit them for your event.
Star Wars Themed TAW Decorations
We really aim at celebrating our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. I know a lot of schools expand this to be the whole staff, so I have provided some verbiage on the printables if that is the case. However is is TEACHER appreciation week and there are other days throughout the year to honor other staff. That being said, we came in on Sunday to decorate the Teacher’s lounge in all things Star Wars to set the theme for the week. Every year I use my circut to make a big poster that hangs in the lounge all week, and then we swap out things on the table to go with the daily theme.
This year the poster said “The Force is Strong With (insert school name or the word “our” Teachers). I used a silver cardstock for the name of our school so it’s kind of hard to read in the picture. We then used this balloon garland around the poster along with these tablecloths. We added some printables that I created and are now available in my Star Wars TAW Digital Bundle along with some Star Wars toys and legos from my son’s room.
We also had some fun things up around the room like this “Sith or Jedi” printable (available in the digital bundle). One of the parents 3D printed the light saber pen toppers and then we got red and blue pens. You can get something similar here.
Monday: May the Fourth Be With You Breakfast
We started the week off with the theme “May the Fourth be With You” because May 4th fell on that Monday. You could rearrange the days to use that for the whenever May the 4th falls (as it usually falls during TAW week). It’s always a debate as to what to do for breakfast, we usually have to have it ready pretty early and a lot of the teachers don’t end up coming in before school starts, even if we serve something hot. So we decided to go with “make your own yogurt parfaits” that they could come in and make at their own leisure. We had pretty good feedback so I think we will be repeating that in the future.
I just got a bunch of different types of yogurts (including some dairy free options), a few types of granola, fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and bananas), chia seeds and honey. We also had parents volunteer to bring or make muffins. I have a few printables to go along with a parfait breakfast in the digital bundle if you want to do the same type of thing (including directions on how to assemble the parfait). We also got some cups like this for them to use to make their parfaits.
We also provided coffee (which we had donated from Starbucks- thank you!) to go along with their yogurt and muffins.
Tuesday: Yoda Soda Bar
Last year we did a Soda bar for our Wicked theme, and it was such a big hit we ended up leaving it up for the rest of the week as we had plenty of supplies leftover. So this year we decided to move it up in the week so they could enjoy it even longer. We did essentially the same thing this year, supplying a variety of sodas and torani syrups and a menu with suggested concoctions. If you want to follow the menu provided in my digital bundle you will need the following supplies:
- Sprite/Diet Sprite
- Mountain Dew/Diet Mountain Dew
- Coke/Diet Coke
- Dr Pepper/ Diet Dr Pepper
- coconut syrup
- raspberry syrup
- peach syrup
- vanilla syrup
- cherry syrup
- half and half
- ice
- lime juice or true lime packets
- syrup pumps
Smart & Final is a good place to check for the syrups. They usually have most of these flavors and for a better price than amazon. Here’s how the set up looked:
The little yoda heads were reused from my Mandolorian party, you can see the details on how I made them here. We also had an additional table set up that had all the soda and ice. We used these kinds of cups with lids and straws.
Wednesday: Wookie Cookie Bar
Wednesday was a simple cookie bar. We asked parents to either buy or make cookies that we set up and displayed around the lounge. Some parents went the extra mile and made Star Wars themed desserts, which was fun.
Thursday: Jedi Fuel Station (snacks + trail mix)
Thursday was a trail mix bar + snacks day. Again we had parents sign up to bring things (and some brought star wars themed snacks) and we also went out and bought trail mixes, popcorns, chips etc. We tried to tie most of the foods in to a Star Wars something or other so I made little food labels to identify them. It really tied it all together and brought it to the next level. Those are also included in the digital bundle, and there are 12 to use and choose from. Many of theme are somewhat generic and can be used for a variety of things (ex: cantina crunch, galactic crunch, darth taters, jedi fuel bars, jedi kabobs, dark side delights etc).
Friday: Choose a Side- Sith or Jedi? Food Truck Friday
Friday, my friends, ended up to be a disaster. On Friday our school gets out at noon and we typically provide lunch for the teachers that day once the students have left. We had a food truck booked (which was a huge hit last year, the teachers just went and ordered what they wanted) which canceled on us at 10 AM THAT MORNING!!!! We had to scramble running all around town trying to piece meal a luncheon for 40 teachers together. Needless to say we will never be working with that food truck again. It was also a school spirit day in essence as each teacher was supposed to pick a side- either Sith or Jedi. And then students could dress in black or white to support the side the teacher chose. I dont really have any photos of Friday since it was just us running around like chickens with our head cut off trying to figure out lunch. In general I do think the food truck idea is a good one. I just hope yours is more reliable than ours was that day. May the force be with you 😉
